World Ice Art Championships

18 Mar

Brandon and I had the opportunity to visit the BP World Ice Art Championships in Fairbanks last weekend. It was so fun!!

Dad, Haylee, Taylor, Brandon & I drove up to Fairbanks with the plan to go spend the day at the Ice Art Park. Taylor apparently had different plans…she threw up about an hour into our two hour ride up to Fairbanks. We were hoping it was just a one time deal but she threw up again when we stopped for lunch in Fairbanks. Dad was worried that she would get dehydrated and didn’t want to risk it since we were two hours from home. So Taylor and Dad hung out at the hospital while Brandon, Haylee, and I got to visit the Ice Park.

When you first walked in the Ice Park there are about a dozen or more ice slides that you can take a ride on. And of course being the big kid that I am, I had to test ALL of them out. 🙂

After going down the first slide I realized to get the best “slippage” I would need to wear my snow pants so off I went to the car to throw on the snow pants. (And yes, that was a total run on sentence. Lol.)

At the Ice Park, there were ice exhibits that you could view. These of course didn’t have any slides for me to slide down but they were still very much entertaining.

These ice carving exhibits were all judged in a variety of categories – Single block, Multi-block, single carver, team carvers – realistic or abstract. On the ice park website it tells about the specific competitions and how long they had to complete the carvings. It is really neat!!

This was one of my very favorite ice sculpture. It is the bones of a King Salmon.

This was the last picture I took before my phone got too cold and shut off. Luckily Brandon was able to snap some pictures while my phone warmed back up in my mittens. 🙂

This ice log cabin even had a table, chairs, sink, and countertop all made out of ice! Pretty cool! No pun intended! Lol.

There were these ice bowls located through out the ice park that you could sit in and then have someone else spin you. I of course opted out of this due to my extremely low tolerance for motion sickness but Brandon did take the ice bowls for a spin. Heehee.

Last but not least, my very favorite part of the day!!…(excuse my finger in the picture)

20130321-205324.jpgThere were 8 slides that you could ride down. We were prepared for these awesome ice slides and had brought our sleds! Woohoo!

20130321-205553.jpg
Brandon stayed entertained at the bottom of the slides watching all the kids wipe out, while Haylee and I raced down the slides. The slides were super slick and so much fun!
Such a great day! 🙂

P.s. Taylor had no more episodes the rest of the day, thank goodness. And no one else got sick! After the ice park we picked Dad & Taylor up from the hospital and headed home.

Winterfest Wonderland

28 Feb

Last weekend Brandon and I got to experience Winterfest in Healy and Denali Park.
20130228-121055.jpg
The kick off for the Winterfest started on Thursday at Tri Valley School where they had an ice sculptor carving two Vikings out of a block of ice. During the day, the students got to go carve their own block of ice while watching the ice sculptor worked on his masterpiece. 20130228-121431.jpg20130228-121446.jpg
The finished Vikings were pretty cool! You could actually stand in the Vikings so it made it look like you were the Viking.
Friday the ice carver did an ice carving for the town of Healy at the community center.

Saturday, Brandon and I headed down to Denali National Park to continue the Winterfest celebration down there. They had delicious FREE food down there – reindeer sausages, seafood chowder, chili, yummy baked goods, and hot coffee!! (I forgot to take a picture of the reindeer sausage that I ate. By the time I remembered to take a picture, I had already inhaled it. Lol.)

At the park they had lots of activities for the kids to do. Brandon and I enjoyed watching.

The park rangers had also brought down several of the sled dogs from the kennel. You could practice putting the dogs in their sledding harnesses or putting the booties on their feet. I just enjoyed lovin’ on the doggies! 🙂

The ice carver was at the park on Saturday doing one last ice sculpture for the area. In Fall 2012, US mint introduced a new line of quarters, National Park quarters. Denali National Park was of course presented with a really neat quarter of a Dall Sheep on it. So of course, it was quite appropriate for the ice carver to do a sculpture of this quarter. 20130228-123044.jpg
Gorgeous!

Saturday night we continued the Winterfest festivities at the Community Center with a free chili feed and live bands.

Taylor thoroughly enjoyed her chili and bread bowl. Lol!20130228-123233.jpg
20130228-123311.jpg
We got to listen to a band called Kentucky Tundra. Heehee. I thought that was quite ironic. Didn’t quite compare to the Handy Fest, but they were entertaining. 🙂20130228-123647.jpg

We had a great time at the Winterfest!

I will eventually get around to blogging about our adventure down in Big Lake at the Iron Dog races but I am having major sinus pressure issues right now so I’m going back to bed!

Snowshoeing part 2

11 Feb

Brandon and I went snowshoeing in Denali National Park on Sunday. The hike was extremely tiring but definitely fun!

We started out at the Winter Visitors Center at the Park & snowshoed to Horseshoe Lake.

20130211-125748.jpg
The weather was perfect! I’m so glad I layered. As we were walking I had to strip off layers because I began to sweat! About 10 minutes in to our hour and a half hike I had to take off my gloves, my scarf, and my balaclava. Haha.

(Brandon snowshoed to the middle of Horseshoe Lake!)

20130211-125756.jpg
Brandon thought I was going to die. Lol. I was breathing so hard and my face was beet red! Haha. BUT I survived and was very proud of us after we finished the hike.

20130211-125807.jpg
After we got home, Brandon was showing my mom the trail map and where we snowshoed…little did we know..we actually snowshoed on a black trail (meaning the most difficult). Agh!! After finding that out Brandon and I were like, “Heck yea! We kicked butt!” Haha.

Love to all!!

Snowshoeing!

8 Feb

I got to go snowshoeing for the first time yesterday. The school has snowshoes available for all the students and teachers to use. I went with 1st & 3rd graders. It was so fun!! 🙂
